On the day she faced The Red Devil, Gretchen Gault walked in wearing costume devil horns and a shirt that read “My Oncologist Does My Hair.” Hers was already gone.
“I was trying to find the humor,” says the Conyers mother of three. In her cancer treatment, the four rounds of drugs andriamycin and cyclophosphamide are collectively known by the nickname The Red Devil. She made her oncologist laugh that day. Dr. Stephen Szabo of Piedmont Oncology, a department of Piedmont Rockdale Hospital, had been alongside Gault since her diagnosis and was always there to help with her ups and downs.
