ATLANTA — The Carter Center and the world celebrated the 100th birthday of former President Jimmy Carter Tuesday. As the longest-living U.S. president in history, world officials say Carter stands as a beacon of leadership and compassion, inspiring people around the globe.

Born on Oct. 1, 1924, in Plains, Carter has dedicated his life to service, integrity and human rights. Early in life, he was an active member of his beloved Plains community alongside his wife, Rosalynn, whom he married in 1946. He was elected to the Georgia state Senate in 1962 and served as Georgia’s 76th governor from 1971 to 1975. He became the 39th president of the United States in 1977 and held that office for four years. Carter’s commitment to advancing human rights and peace globally was evident through his foreign policy accomplishments and domestic initiatives.
