As we move into the heart of winter, our landscapes appear lifeless. We look forward to the beautiful flowers of the growing season. However, numerous plants bloom in the winter, adding color to our gardens.

The best known are the pansies, which are winter annuals and a type of violet. They come in multiple colors and thrive in the winter landscape. Another related plant is the Johnny-Jump-Ups, which are miniature pansies. Winter annuals include snapdragons, dusty miller, ornamental cabbage, kale, and Swiss chard. Though they are tolerant to the winter cold, during hard freeze, when the temperatures drop below 20 degrees, cover them with frost blankets or pine straw.
