The Henry County Branch NAACP was presented with the Ella Jo Baker Award and the coveted Dr. Ross Thalheimer Award at the National Membership Luncheon during the 114th National NAACP Convention hosted in Boston, MA, from July 26 to Aug. 1.

McDONOUGH — The Girl’s First Inc. community garden in McDonough is a gift that keeps giving for Rosalyn Matthews.

Matthews, the president of Henry County Branch NAACP, is one of several partners for the project that launched in May. The community collaboration is one built by Girl’s First in partnership with the Henry County NAACP, the Henry and Clayton Section for the National Council of Negro Women, and the Top Ladies of Distinction New Rock Chapter.

The Ella Jo Baker Award was presented to the Henry County NAACP branch for a 154% increase in membership from 2022 to 2023. The Thalheimer Award is the NAACP’s top award given to branches and units for outstanding program achievements. The Henry County branch received this award for its partnership with the Girls First Inc. community garden in McDonough.
