Following Monday’s State of Emergency declaration for all of Georgia, and with most of the state under either a winter storm warning or winter storm advisory, the Georgia Department of Transportation has provided an update on the agency’s storm preparations.
Over the past 48 hours, ahead of the storm’s arrival, Georgia DOT crews have been busy applying brine to Georgia’s interstates, priority state routes, bridges and overpasses. As of Tuesday morning, Georgia DOT crews had treated more than 43,000 lane miles of Georgia interstates, state routes, bridges and overpasses with more than 1.7 million gallons of brine, a salt and water mixture that helps keep ice from bonding to the surface of the road. More than 1,500 Georgia DOT employees make up the crews that have traversed the state since early Sunday morning, supplemented by contractor forces in some areas. All interstates and priority state routes across the state had been treated at least once by early Tuesday morning; many had been treated more than once. Brine works best at temperatures of 20 degrees and above.
