Recently, the UGA Extension Henry County office has been receiving calls from area homeowners concerning the large number of yellow jackets around their homes, especially in their backyards near decks and patios.

The sugar in the soft drink cans or candy wrappers that are tossed into garbage cans outside attract them, and they often come from quite some distance. They build their nests in the ground and the nests are often hidden. People can sometimes walk over their nests and not be aware they have done so. The insects swarm out and sting.
